Funky

Still here, haven’t written much as I’ve been dealing with the February Funk I get every year, where things don’t seem worth it and everyone seems malicious.

Every February I come down with the funk and every February I slide into malaise, laziness, ennui, all those great words for boredom and mild depression.

However, as March approaches, the funk tends to lift.

This year it’s all due to fantastic–in the Fantastic Voyage sort of way–local bowling excursions, moving community theater productions, midnight oysters and french fries at Bistro Jeanty and midnight gallery showings.

New crafty friends, a dog that listens and cuddles and spins with joy, an upcoming Oscar party, these things help to clear the funk.

Did I mention the thing with her name? We’re tentatively going with Pinot (seemed appropriate). Half the time we’re calling her Pinot and the other half, Shiloh, but she seems to like Pinot. It lends itself to nicknames like “Grape Ape” and “Professor Blanc-ie-de-Grigio.”

Thank you internet for naming our dog!

Also, President’s day is the best holiday ever, not because I like our president, but because it’s the kind of day off that you forget, and then remember again, bringing utter joy and love and happiness each time the remembering happens again.

just remember, that if it wasn’t for the funk, the highs that follow wouldn’t feel as high. ebb and flow.

    hi helen jane!
i love february so i’m going to stick up for it…
first, the pagan celebration imbolc (candlemas in the christian religion) celebrates the midway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. the changing of the weather from dark and cold to light and warm is celebrated by lighting as many candles as possible, which is not only beautiful but quite romantic! all this is supposed to inspire a turning within your heart and your soul as well. brighter days ahead and all that good stuff…
second, februare (in latin) means “to purify”, hence, i treat february as a time to cleanse…my house, my negative thoughts, any ick at all. blah – get it out!
third, valentine’s day is in february – yay! i know many people do not like valentine’s day, but personally, i love it! all the red and hearts and little tokens of love. i wish people would do that year round!
and finally, my birthday is in february – exactly 14 days after valentine’s day, so i kind of think its a little special. : )
hope you are all well up there!

helen jane! pinot is a wonderful name! i heard a neat piece on NPR driving home from work the other day about the rising popularity of pinot noir wine because of the movie “sideways.” very interesting. besides, the name is so appropriate given your big move and exciting new job. seems so fitting.
