Bocce Awards Ceremony

Our newest memberLast Thursday we held our annual bocce awards ceremony.

Certainly, you could say it was a waste of our time.
Certainly, you could say we looked silly, in our matching red jackets,
with our toasts,
with our claps on the back.

Certainly, we were a little silly.

Silly indeed, our bocce awards ceremony is important to me,
maybe even sacred.

Once a year, we gather these people together to say, “Hey! You tried your best and I noticed!”

I was lucky to have that happen a lot for me as a kid.
Through music, sports and art,
people created time and space to let me know that my effort did not pass by unnoticed.

That happens nigh never as a grown up.
And it could happen more.

Bocce Award Ceremony

So Tom, he won the Ringer award, the yearly award we give out for best play.
Everyone else received a collaged medallion that hung around their neck.
The medallion had one word on it that represented the team member’s contribution to the team.
Words like,
“Buoyant”
“Scandalous”
“Rock-Steady”
(Okay, that’s two words, but you get the point.)

Is there a group of grown ups in your life that are working hard with no recognition?

Might I suggest a pizza party with some certificates or cardboard medallions?
It bounced me into this week with a smile and an appreciation of friendship.

A Shiny Bocce Evening

A Sand Crab BottleThe babysitter came and James and I left the house.
James and I kissed before we got in the car.
Since this season of bocce started, we went on a bocce date.

On this, the first night of bocce, the potluck theme was “Dogs.”
(We played the Hone Dogs, the team with the most wins in town.)

Caffo’s corn sausage dogs were amazing.
Cocktail weenies in all their glory, glorious.
The Dogs in a blanket?
Tasty as all get out.

Our friends, the “Sand Crabs,” made a macaroni and cheese with crab and crawfish that was well, a life-changer. I also tasted some Nickel & Nickel, so, there was that.

We may have lost all three games.
Okay, we did.
But hooray bocce!

I love these guys

Joanie jackets make you look even more foxy than you already are.
I can’t say that about the competition.

Not all baby

Egads, I fear I’ve become that person.
I talk about the baby all day long.
Nap times, feedings, doctor visits and blah blah blah.

Apologies if I’ve bored you.
I’ve also been doing other stuff.

Deep ThoughtsOur bocce team, Joanie Loves Bocce, has 11 wins and only one loss under its belt. That loss I feel personally responsible for as I played that game. That was the only game I’ve played in this season.

See, I was really great at bocce when I was pregnant.
Now, not so much.
(I think it was the exceptional counter balance she provided.)
(See? There I go talking about the baby again.)

Our food themes this season have been really fun.
We’ve had food that
begins with the letter B
is inside out and upside down
feels like the first time (food that we’ve never made before)

And I’ve never had more fun with these people.
Who would have thought bocce.
BOCCE of all things would have such an impact on my life.

Come to think about it, I feel the same way about cookbooks.

Welcome!I’ve joined a cookbook club. Once a month 12 exceptional ladies get together to cook recipes out of a single cookbook.
And there is wine.
And mama’s first solitary night out was a hoot.

We had the event at Acme Fine Wines, a fancy wine store off the beaten path in St. Helena. It is in a shiny, modern/rustic, brand new building that had us feeling exclusive indeed.

Despite our lack of a web site, Cheesewhizzes is still kicking. Next event comes soon and I’ll tell you all about our cheesy goodness as it happens.

Today I have my third in-person business meeting with a baby (there I go again). It’s nice to have such open-minded clientfriends that don’t mind the occasional yelp, jiggle or holler.

Yeah, she’s just become such a part of my life that she’s a part of my life.
(Thanks for coming with me on this trip.)

Oh wait, yep, here it comes, baby photo, I simply can’t control it.

Bocce, won 2, lost 1

Joanie Loves Bocce update.

Last night, we won two games, lost one against the “Bocce Bandits.”
(They wore neckerchiefs to demonstrate their banditness. We out-styled them in our foxy jackets.)

Sea of red

Our food theme was “All Balls.” So everyone conspired to make ball-shaped food.

Balls: Albóndigas

It was also hilarious to talk about putting “balls in your mouth” or tasting Caffo’s “Chocolate Salty Balls.”

Group Tasting

Next time you need to host a potluck or food theme, remember the balls!

Where I'm at

Kevs and I reign supreme.Busy with building new business, business, busyness.
Busybusiness.

Joanie Love Bocce is rockin’ the autumn season. We’ve won 4, lost 2 and are shaping up to be powerhouses of the Thursday night. Each week we have a food theme. So far our themes have been “Made of Pork,” “Dip and Punch” and this week’s “Lunch Lady Food.” I’m bringing tater tots and crinkle fries with dipping sauces.

Tom will bring the sloppy joes.
I hope someone brings tuna casserole or turkey tetrazzini.

Our team chipped in to get jackets printed from customink.com. I can recommend their jacket delivery prowess.
Plus, we look tough.

Proposals and P-card lunches and paperwork and phone calls.
And cool new contacts and opportunities.
The universe is being very cool right now.

I’m a Halo 3 widow for the next week.
With that time, I am looking forward to test some new recipes.

(Between you and me I will probably get addicted to some new show that’s even better than my current addiction called Clean House.)

Foods to prepare during this time:
Acorn squash ravioli (thanks Bryce!) with brown butter and crispy sage.
Lasagnas and chicken enchiladas for the couple across the street with the new baby.
Spicy shrimp and crusty bread

Clare moved out this week. She’s gone to her new spiffy apartment in San Francisco. James and I miss her already. She’s taking the furniture with her that she left with us for the past three years.
So the excavation of the house begins!
On a budget for doll houses!

Do you listen to podcasts?
I want to learn more about them.
What are examples of the really good ones?
Or are you through with podcasts?

I’m being nicer to myself this week and it’s really paying off.
It’s making my heart a little softer.
I hope you are nice to you too.
